Kuhn's "Structure of Scientific Revolutions" Thomas Kuhn and his "Structure of Scientific Revolutions" has done more damage to the sciences in modern times than Catholic Church ever did. The Catholic Church merely used force which has ever proven quite ineffective against an idea. But Kuhn torpedoed science with an idea, which was far more devastating, even though it was (intentional or not) a lie. Look it is not that I don't think that science didn't need taking down a step. People into science were getting far to self righteous and condescendingly complacent to bear any longer. But the correct means to accomplish this was to recognize the limitations of science in scope. Science looks at the world through mathematics colored glasses. But Kuhn catered to the laziness of the general populous which felt more than a little fear for an increasingly complex subject by giving them an excuse to dismiss its all of its claims entirely. Why take what science says now seriously when at some future time it is just going change its mind completely. Whether intended by Kuhn or not, the lie promoted by his philosophy is that science progresses by overthrowing its previous ideas in successive revolutions. Nothing could be further from the truth. If Einstein overthrew Newton then why does the physics of Newton continue to be taught to all beginning students of physics? The answer is that Einstein did not overthrow Newton at all. Science does not develop by revolutions and Kuhn's ideas are complete nonsense. As a result of Kuhn's lie and the popularity and ease with which the ideas of science fiction are absorbed without effort in the mass media is that the general population puts more faith in star trek than in Einstein (and all the rest of the scientists who have no doubts about his discoveries at all). Now with blindness similar to the fundamentalist christians' rejection of evolution, the increasing majority of people reject relativity without really even understanding what it says. Do I even need to mention the fact that Kuhn's lies have likewise encouraged the religious to invent their own pseudo sciences, which reduce science to little more than rhetoric. My particular interest in metaphysics (the study of the nature of reality) has given me a special reason to be annoyed with Kuhn. It has become quite obvious that any serious metaphysics requires a deep understanding in the sciences especially physics. I think that Kuhn is partially to blame for the fact that Metaphysics is competely dead in the academic world. Since work in metaphysics would require mastery in physics it is arduous enough without having to face the skepticism created by the atmosphere of Kuhn's lies. My beef against Kuhn relates to my objections to Marxist-Leninism as well. Kuhn's analayis is seem like an obvious application of the dialectic to the philosophy of science, and like most ideologies it keeps trying to fit square pegs in round holes. The idea of revolution as a model for social change is just as flawed. People keep holding up the success of the American revolution as a proof of this thinking, but this is pure rhetoric. The American revolution was a defensive action to protect and maintain the social order that was already in place in America free from disruption and interference by Britain. Over and over, history proves that the dialectic is a flawed concept and its influence has perpetuated a infantile understanding of the process of evolution as well. I would like to point out my innate pragmatism. I am far more concerned with the psychological and sociological effects of Kuhn's philosophy on the public than I am about the validity of Kuhn's logic.
